Providing a cosy, laid-back atmosphere coupled with the edgy rock anthems of the 60s and 80s and a slew of calorie-heavy monstrosities, Fatboy’s The Burger Bar at Upper Thomson is where it’s at if you’re looking for a tasty meal and a great time.
Contrary to the vibe the restaurant exudes, the boys behind the grill are anything but laid-back. On the contrary, the food here is made with utmost precision and professionalism.
That said, every burger is cooked to utter perfection before it gets sent out. So whether you prefer your burgers rare, medium or slightly over, you can trust that every burger is hand-crafted and suited to your personal preference.
Best Dish at FatBoy’s: Fat Basterd Burger
Among their repertoire of burger options, the one that reigns most popular until this day is the Fat Basterd (S$19.50). This delicious mess comprises not one, but two thick beef chuck patties, bacon, cheddar cheese, a fried egg and their house-made barbecue sauce.
Challenging as it may be to fit everything in a single bite, it’s well worth it. The beef patties are crisp and caramelised around the edges, yet soft and juicy in the middle. The epitome of a perfectly balanced burger, you get a heightened richness from the cheese and the runny egg yolk along with a smoky, saltiness from the bacon.
Feeling Adventurous? Try their Salted Egg Fries
Out of sheer curiosity, we ordered the Salted Egg Fries (S$7) to share. Despite its enticing aroma, we were not entirely fond of the dish mostly because the intense creaminess of the sauce proved cloying a quarter way through.
Albeit too overwhelming for our taste, we can understand why people would still order it either way. The flavour of the salted egg yolk sauce was pronounced and the crispy baby shrimp sprinkled over provides a hint of umami.
Here at Fatboy’s, pints of Stella Artois and Hoegarden go for S$10 nett all day long, so knock yourselves out.
