Craving for traditional Chinese desserts or a hearty bowl of Hong Kong-style Mango Sago? Ah Chew Desserts 阿秋甜品 is dubbed as one of the best dessert shops by Singaporeans; well-known for their extensive combination of old-school Asian sweet treats and contemporary desserts. With over 50 desserts to choose from, we believe that there will be something for everyone here.
We recently made a visit to Ah Chew Desserts at Novena – this outlet opens till midnight daily and is conveniently located across Novena MRT Station. The dessert stall faces the main road and you can easily spot it; simply look out for the antique-looking signboard that is prominently displayed at the shopfront.

The quaint Chinese décor and warm lighting from the lanterns gave the place a warm ambience, making it an ideal place to enjoy a bowl of dessert and momentarily escape from the hustle and bustle of life.

We ordered the Fresh Milk Steamed Egg with Chocolate Cookies Topping (S$3.80), Black Sesame Paste (S$3.30) and the Mango Sago (S$4). All the desserts at Ah Chew are served in oriental ceramic bowls – it reminded us of our childhood memories and invoked a sense of nostalgia.

The Fresh Milk Steamed Egg with Chocolate Cookies Topping (S$3.80) is essentially a bowl of egg custard steamed till silky smooth. It had a creamy texture and the addition of chocolate cookie toppings gave the dessert a good amount of crunch. One would automatically assume that this dessert will turn out overbearingly sweet, but we were pleasantly surprised that its sweetness was actually mild.

Next, we tried the Black Sesame Paste (S$3.30) which we found underwhelming. While it was decent, we did not like how diluted it was. We were honestly expecting a thicker and richer dessert. But to each his own – as some may actually prefer a less viscous paste.

Lastly, we tucked into the highly anticipated bestseller – Mango Sago (S$4). Served with generous chunks of mango, this was definitely the best dish out of all three desserts we tried.
The zesty mango puree was very well-balanced. The evaporated milk’s creaminess complemented the chewy tapioca pearls and crunchy bits of ice. We love how every mouthful was an explosion of fruity flavours!

Late-night desserts don’t always have to be overpriced ice cream waffles and bingsoo. Save Ah Chew Desserts into your dessert parlour checklist!
