A homegrown cafe brand, Chaiwalla & Co Container Café has grown by leaps and bounds since its early days standing as nothing more than a beverage kiosk along the cafe-laden streets of Jalan Tan Hiok Nee.
They’re best known for their drinks and unique aesthetic that’s largely centred around steel containers and greenery which seems to be the cafe’s main draw.
As far as food is concerned, the choices are limited to two varieties of meat-based pie—chicken mushroom and black pepper beef—brownies topped with ice cream and microwaved pasta.
That said, it’s not the food that people come for but rather their repertoire of customisable drinks. Since they now function as a proper sit-down cafe, another notable aspect is that they now operate until late.
Chaiwalla & Co Container Cafe boasts a rustic industrial chic with lots of greenery added to give it a more convivial and relaxed feel to it.
Original Thai Milk Tea
As recommended by their staff, we opted for Chaiwalla & Co Container Cafe’s supposed bestseller, the Original Thai Milk Tea (RM9.80).
You have the option of adding on a variety of toppings from jelly to pearls but we decided not to, seeing as to how we like ours plain and simple.
It tasted pretty similar to the sort of Thai milk tea you can get off carts in Thailand with the exception of the profound creaminess of it as a result of better quality milk. Overall, it was a pretty decent beverage to help combat the heat and we liked that they went as far as to freshly brew the tea upon order. Our only gripe, albeit a small one, was that it was a tad too sweet.
Brownie
For RM9.80, you get a reasonably sized fudge brownie that comes served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and lashings of salted caramel syrup. The sweetness of the chewy brownie is nicely underscored by the saltiness of the caramel, making for one heck of a decadent treat.
We recommend ordering this to share as it tends to get a little cloying after a while—especially if you’re pairing it with something as indulgent and sweet as a Thai Milk Tea.
