Following the endemic community measures, Singapore’s nightlife has gradually returned since the ease of the restrictions, along with many events that have taken place the past two months. From the reopening of nightclubs and festivals, Singapore is once again packed with many fun activities for you and your loved ones to enjoy.
Art enthusiasts will be glad to know that the i Light Festival is back with another instalment after its two-year hiatus. Look forward to interactive art exhibits, immersive light displays, and a camera full of photos and videos. Let us take you through some of the highlights!
Plastic Whale
Located right outside the fountain at MBS Shoppes, this light exhibition showcases a giant plastic whale that you can walk into. As majestic as it is, the reality of this art piece highlights the drastic effects of pollution caused by men – experience the scale at which this mammal exists while hearing it breathe in distress caused by pollutants such as plastic bottles and waste.
- Location: Marina Bay Sands Event Plaza
- Admission: Free
Fallen
In line with the theme of sustainability and climate change, Fallen follows a narrative of an ethereal jellyfish that roamed the universe in search of stars to consume, unfortunately consuming trash that is orbited by humans, and ends up crashing on earth.
- Location: Lawn next to One Marina Boulevard
- Admission: Free
Light Canvas
Be your own artist at i Light Singapore 2022 as you let your imagination run free at this exhibit. Simply shine a light on the blank canvas and design away! As with all art exhibits, this Light Canvas dives deeper into the concept of sustainability – are our short-lived efforts worth the energy used? What are the costs for temporal satisfaction?
- Location: In front of Red Dot Design Museum
- Admission: Free
Alone Together
More than just appreciating art from a distance, Alone Together is an exhibit that encourages one to interact with it. Scan the QR codes available around the exhibit and select the options available to watch the characters sing or dance. Alone Together screams an oxymoronic image – isolation during the pandemic yet overcoming this obstacle together.
- Location: Marina Bay Link Mall Entrance
- Admission: Free
Ruffled Ice
Upcycling can be turned into beautiful art as well. This is exactly the heart behind Ruffled Ice, as it emphasises on the excessive usage of plastic in retail packaging, generating more waste in the environment. Ruffled Ice depicts melting icebergs and ice caverns by using plastic waste collected from various organisations, highlighting the grave damage caused by the imprudent use of plastics.
- Location: Mist Walk
- Admission: Free
Collective Memory
Curated by students from Singapore University of Technology and Design who won the i Light Student Award 2020, Collective Memory brings us on a trip down memory lane as viewers reminisce of old times where entertainment was played on CDs and record players. Sculpted with over 1600 CDs, this artwork interweaves memories and spatial experience as light reflects off each CD.
- Location: Breeze Shelter
- Admission: Free
Firefly Field
Hey Google, play ‘Fireflies’ by Owl City on Spotify. Walk through a field of fireflies as you get enchanted by the romantic lighting. This exhibit features 500 ‘fireflies’ that are strategically designed to mimic the intermittent flashing pattern of fireflies. As Owl City says: “I’d get a thousand hugs from ten thousand lightning bugs.”
- Location: The Promontory at Marina Bay
- Admission: Free
