Ming Fa: Local Noodle Shop in Upper Thomson Opens till 4:30am Daily

Previously known as Meng Kitchen, this humble hole-in-the-wall eatery dishes out exceptional bowls of bak chor mee, fishball noodles and the like. It recently underwent a massive facelift and is now transformed, fully decked out in modern furnishings, plasma screens, heritage mural and a new name to boot.

That said, the quality of their food hasn’t changed with their highly-acclaimed bak chor mee still remaining as delicious and comforting as ever. They have, however, expanded their menu slightly to include items such as rice dishes and a selection of fried snacks.

Open until 4:30 am daily, they’re a great option to consider after drinks. A testament to their popularity, it isn’t surprising to see a full house even after midnight.

A quintessential staple here at Ming Fa Fishball is their Minced Meat Mushroom Noodle (S$4.50) of which, by itself draws crowds from as early as daybreak. Depending on your noodle of choice, the dish gets tossed around in a piquant chilli sauce along with a generous of vinegar, giving it a deliciously acidic quality.

A standard bowl comes topped with a generous serving of minced pork, lean meat slices, a pork ball and braised mushrooms. Overall, it’s a flavourful marriage of tasty, meaty components. Just the sort of thing the body would need after a few rounds of drinks.

Their Laksa (S$4.50), although considerably thinner in viscosity compared to conventional varieties, did not lack in the flavour department at all. Boasting a heady aroma of spices and a milky richness, every mouthful was as comforting as the first.

If you’re not turned off by the mineral flavour of cockles, go ahead and include it and the ones served here are plump and fresh, complementing the flavourful broth very well.

From their arsenal of deep-fried delights, the one that seemed most enticing was their Golden Ball (S$3.50).

Essentially a Fuzhou fishball that’s breaded and fried, the outer skin was deliciously crisp while the inside was soft. Slice down the middle to reveal a meaty centre comprising marinated minced pork, a characteristic synonymous to the signature fish ball from Fuzhou.

For maximum enjoyment, dip it into their citrusy mayo.
