Making a stellar comeback after a hiatus in 2017, Sugarhall is back as a rum-centric cocktail pub! It is owned by the Jigger and Pony group, and the OGs will know Sugarhall used to be next to Jigger and Pony (when they were both at Amoy Street). Now located in the heart of the CBD, it also happens to be right above sister restaurant, Rosemead.
Step into the cosy English-style pub interior, furnished with dark wood accents illuminated by warm fairy lights across the ceiling and exposed pillars that add a distressed look, paying tribute to the building’s heritage.
Rum-based Cocktails to Try at Sugarhall
Sugarhall’s new beverage programme is headed by Bar Operations Manager Davide Boncimino and Sugarhall veteran and Principal Bartender Sam Loh. It promises a rediscovery of classics across the cocktail spectrum but done stellar; which cocktails that feature rums built on innate characteristics shaken or stirred with homemade ingredients.
Rum aficionados will rejoice at their Rum of the Month programme with tasting flights that will keep you coming back to try new rums each month. If you’re dropping by, happy hour is from 4pm to 6pm, with selected cocktails at just $14 plus beers and wines from $12!
Daiquiri ($22)
This all-time favourite is one of Sugarhall’s Signature Cocktails 🍸 It may be a classic, but we’ve never had a Daiquiri like this – made from two rums, Bacardi Superior 1909 and the Veritas blended rum. You get a mix of fresh notes of citrus and vanilla, combined with an aromatic palate, resulting in a tasty sipper.
Warning: This seemingly innocent-looking cocktail is stroooong, just the way we like it!
Mango Colada ($24)
If we were on a beach holiday, lounging under the sun with a cocktail in hand, this would be the one cocktail we’d be sipping! Made with Havana Club 7yo Rum, Chalong Bay Thai Sweet Basil Rum, mango sorbet, coconut water, and topped with coconut bits. With refreshing coconut notes and tropical mangoes, this sweet sipper has just the right amount of booze and a lovely, creamy mouthfeel.
Hotel Nacional ($24)
Made with Matusalem Solera 7 Rum, Mount Gay Black Barrel Rum, apricot brandy, caramelised pineapples, and lime, this tropical tipple is one to try if you’ve got a sweet tooth! The pineapples are caramelised and then blitzed with local pineapples, producing exciting layers of pineapple flavours. Light, sweet and packed with pineapple flavours, it reminds us of a pineapple tart!
Pornstar Martini ($22)
Made with Grey Goose Vodka, passion fruit, lime, pandan, and served with sparkling wine on the side. The passionfruit is cured, thus mellowing out the usual tartness so it’s not too overwhelming on the palate.
This English pub classic can be enjoyed on its own, followed by a sip of the Prosecco for a dry fizziness, or mixed together! Difference between mixing or enjoying separately? The Pornstar Martini tastes lighter and bubblier; with a robust initial passionfruit flavour and more distinct notes of the pandan on the finish.
Other Cocktails to Try at Sugarhall
Rum aside, Sugarhall also has an impressive range of cocktails made with other spirits, such as whisky and gin.
H&M Sour ($24)
This citrusy tipple is made with Roku Gin, sencha, lemon, hazelnut liqueur, egg white, matcha, and topped with a rice cracker. Tip: Sip the cocktail on the side with and without the matcha, and taste the difference! The matcha adds a slightly more aromatic and bitter taste to the cocktail. Overall, the H&M Sour is pleasantly creamy, citrusy with a hint of tartness, plus added savouriness from the rice cracker. One of our faves!
Cho-co N’ Oil ($28)
Made with Doorly’s XO Rum, Velvet Falernum, coconut oil, and rum bonbon. Take a sip, followed by the bite of the rum bonbon for the whole experience!
Pommy’s Margarita ($22)
Codigo Blanco Tequila, Christian Drouin Pommeau, agave nectar, and cinnamon. Expect floral, botanical-forward aromas, with a light and slightly sweet flavour.
Il Presidente ($28)
This potent cocktail is made of Appleton Estate 15yo Black River Cask Rum, sherry vermouth, marsala, and Amaro Montenegro.
Food at Sugarhall
Sugarhall also has a drool-worthy selection of elevated pub fare! Created by Executive Chef David Tang, you’ll find the menu revolves around easy-to-enjoy flavours.
We tried the Chicken Liver Toast ($8), Marinated Olives ($10), Curry Empanadas ($8), Fried Chicken with Sweet-Sour Glaze ($29), and Wagyu Cheese Burger with Bacon and Fries ($35). We loved the rich and creamy chicken liver toast and fried chicken that reminded us of a hearty Korean yangnyeom fried chicken.
There’s always space for dessert, and in this case, it was Elena’s Cheesecake with Rum and Raisin ($21). Prepared basque burnt cheesecake style, the dense cheesy flavours were savoury, and the cake was generously infused with rum. Boozy and delicious!
Now that we’re back in the office, how about checking out Sugarhall for a much-needed drink after a long day? You’re definitely in for a grand time with their friendly and fun-loving hospitality, craft tipples, and satiating bites!
