Party people, get ready to rock out and dance the night away! Summer Sonic Festival returns this year and will be happening on the 19th and 20th of August.
Summer Sonic is an annual multi-day music festival in Japan. It’s known for being held simultaneously across 2 venues at once at: Tokyo’s ZOZO Marine Stadium and Makuhari Messe, and Osaka’s Mashima Sonic Park.
Established in 2000, Summer Sonic has since attracted diverse lineups. From local rock musicians and indie bands, to even world-famous pop singers. To name some, bands like The 1975, Metallica, and even artists such as Taylor Swift and Beyoncé have previously taken the stage here before!
On top of Summer Sonic’s star-studded list of artists, they also offer state-of-the-art production and feature art exhibitions, autograph sessions, and many more. It’s no wonder how Summer Sonic became one of Japan’s biggest annual urban music festival!
Summer Sonic Festival Artist Lineup
Tokyo – Day 1
Leading the lineup of the festival in Tokyo for day 1 are: English alternative rock band Blur, American rock band Fall Out Boy, former member of boy band ‘One Direction’ Niall Horan, American bassist Thundercat, Indie pop rock band Two Door Cinema Club, British indie rock group Wet Leg and Japanese music superduo Yoasobi.
You can also look forward to catching South Korean K-POP groups ENHYPHEN and NewJeans. ICYDK, girl group NewJeans have already become the talk of the down despite debuting for not even a year! This is all thanks to their mega hits- ‘OMG’, ‘Ditto’, ‘Cookie’ and ‘Hypeboy’.
Osaka – Day 1
Headlining the extravaganza over at Osaka are American rapper and songwriter Kendrick Lamar, who’s known for his progressive music styles and socially conscious songwriting ; Liam Gallagher, the English singer whose music and style have left a significant imprint on the British pop culture ; gothic alternative metal and hard rock band Evanescence, Australian rapper and singer-songwriter The Kid LAROI ; American pop band LANY and Lauv, who’s known for his genre-agnostic approach to music.
As the headliners for the 2 locations will switch places on the second day, you don’t have to worry about missing them out for whichever venue you pick!
Getting to Summer Sonic Festival
For those headed to the festival in Tokyo, Zozo Marine Stadium and Makuhari Messe is in an urban location that’s easily accessible from central Tokyo by train. Driving is not recommended as there are limited parking lots.
For the folks going to Osaka, you can take the subway to Cosmosquare station, then hop on the paid shuttle bus bound for Maishima Summer Sonic Park.
