Hong Kong-style dessert cafe, SYST, is a gem that offers a wide range of classic Cantonese treats. The menu features sweet soups—otherwise known as ‘tong sui’ in Cantonese—along with innovative, contemporary treats, namely their crowd-favourite, Fried Durian. It is situated within close proximity to shopping haven, KSL City in Johor Bahru.
The cosy cafe looks the part from head to toe with bench-type seats resembling those you’d typically see in old-school cha chaan tengs in Hong Kong. Its old furniture and neon aesthetics flushed against tiled walls make it an Instagrammer’s paradise too.
In addition to sweets, SYST also serves a decent array of savouries inspired by Hong Kong’s street food. Look forward to classic HK-style dishes such as Macaroni soup, curry fish balls, loaded egg sandwiches and more!
Steamed Egg With Milk
Smooth, custardy with a light tinge of sweetness, their Steamed Egg with Milk (RM9) is one we’d highly recommend. A simple dessert comprising egg whites, fresh milk and sugar, this classic Cantonese pudding-like dessert works up a real treat. It’s ideal for those who are looking for something hot, comforting and not overly sweet.
Fried Durian (SYST’s Best-Seller)
A favourite among the cafe’s repertoire of desserts, their Fried Durian (RM9.50) will surely delight lovers of the king of fruit. Encased in a golden, crispy tempura batter is a luscious, sweet and fragrant durian purée. Served fresh out the fryer, we recommend eating it immediately to experience the full pleasure of having molten durian flowing out of it.
Peanut Butter-Stuffed French Toast
Stuffed with an even coating of chunky butter before being dipped into egg and fried to golden perfection, their French Toast (RM5.50) is a dessert that begs to be shared. It’s buttery, luxurious, crispy on all edges and the salty peanut butter coupled with the sweet maple syrup drizzled over top makes for one heck of a flavour combo.
