Located in the heart of Katong, right behind Stirling Steak’s freezer door (no sub-zero temperatures await you, don’t worry!), The Hidden Story is the first speakeasy in the east. The new bar pays homage to the legendary illicit bars during America’s prohibition and the rich Peranakan heritage of the neighbourhood.
Even the interior evokes a sense of nostalgia, with the plump leather sofas, antique tables with Peranakan-Asian motives and custom-made Tiffany lamps. The highlight, though, is the Onyx bar top, wrapped with Peranakan tiles.
The Hidden Story’s Cocktails
Inspired by the neighbourhood’s Straits Chinese roots, The Hidden Story’s cocktail programme uses distinctly Peranakan ingredients and flavours.
Peranakan Enclave
Made with dry Gin, rose, lychee and lemon, this sweet, tangy and refreshing tipple reminded us a little of a Gimlet but Peranakan-style. While it boasts an aromatic floral nose, the finish is slightly more on the sour side.
Brass Lion Distillery Collaboration
The bar has also collaborated with local Gin distiller Brass Lion Distillery on a series of cocktails created by Kino Soh, Brass Lion’s Brand Ambassador, using the Butterfly Pea Gin with the Butterfly Pea flower, a staple in Peranakan culture and cuisine.
The Lavender Negroni was a lovely floral take on the classic. It pays homage to The Hidden Story’s roots as a speakeasy and Kino’s deep respect for the area’s heritage.
Wines, Spirits and More
If you’re not feeling a cocktail, the bar also has a curated wine list that ranges from Old World favourites to New World takes. Think an aromatic Rhone Valley Syrah or even a Bourbon Barrel Aged Chardonnay!
Whisky lovers aren’t forgotten, with an impressive selection of whiskies from Scotland to India; Taiwan to Japan; and storied distilleries to modern urban ones.
Easties, grab your buddies and head down to The Hidden Story for an intimate night of drinks… Away from crowds and the busy streets of Katong!
