Yan Kee Noodle House is a 24-hr noodle joint specialising in minced pork noodles; otherwise referred to in the local tongue as bak chor mee. The prominent supper spot is popular for its array of local noodle dishes, especially their signature Dry Mee Sua.
They used to be situated inside one of the stalls in BK Eating House. But after disputes with their former landlord, they decided move to a new location i.e. literally right across the street. A new bak chor mee stall—a direct replica of the original—has since taken up residence in the coffee shop, taking over their former shop space. Safe to say, they may look like them, but as far as taste and quality go, they’re miles behind.
Speciality Dry Mee Sua
When it comes to noodle options, common varieties include either mee pok or mee kia. But here at Yan Kee Noodle House, we implore you to opt for the mee sua option instead. At S$4.50 a bowl, patrons get a sizeable portion of perfectly cooked mee sua tossed in a saucy mixture of black vinegar, sambal and pork lard.
The noodles are topped with a generous amount of minced pork, sliced tender pork, crispy ikan bilis, a braised mushroom and a meatball. Though the combination of ingredients is simple, they work terrifically well.
We liked that the mee sua was smooth but firm. It’s definitely heaps better than many others who often overcook theirs resulting in a noodle that’s stodgy and starchy! Tossed around in a vinegar and chilli mixture, every bite was a flavourful hit of comforting savouriness underscored by a sourish piquancy.
