Wong Ah Wah (W.A.W) is a famous Chinese restaurant in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Located in the bustling Jalan Alor night market, the no-frills eatery opens from 5:00 pm till 4:00 am every day and makes a great casual supper spot.
Wong Ah Wah started off as a humble hawker selling BBQ chicken wings and has grown rapidly over the years. Today, it occupies five units on Jalan Alor and is a household name amongst Malaysians. You can choose to dine indoors in the comfort of air conditioning, or join the revelry outside.
Wong Ah Wah’s popularity extends beyond Malaysia’s capital and we could easily confirm this with its numerous framed photos of celebrities. Even Mandopop King Jay Zhou and the late Anthony Bourdain dined here before. Despite its global fame, we had no issues getting a table on a late Sunday night.
No trip to Wong Ah Wah is complete until you try their signature Chicken Wings (RM 3.50 / piece). Chicken wings are neatly arranged on gigantic metallic skewers and then marinated with a brush. The cook manually fans the charcoal with a bamboo fan and rotates the skewers to cook the poultry over flames.
Smoky, juicy and tender, we were won over by the slightly charred delicious chicken wings. Take note that there is a minimum order of two chicken wings. At USD 0.85 each, it’s very affordable.
The delicious Barbecue Stingray (prices subjected to season and weight) was served on a banana leaf and smeared with a generous portion of spicy sambal chilli paste. While the Ikan Bakar is no stranger to Malaysians and Singaporeans, many foreigners find the idea of consuming it shocking. Don’t worry- they are totally edible!
Other recommended dishes at Wong Ah Wah include Balachan Kang Kong (from RM 16 / USD 3.85), KL Hokkien Mee (from RM 11 / USD 2.65), Butter Prawns (RM 32 / USD 7.75) and Grilled Satay (RM 1.30 / USD 0.30 each). Note that there is a minimum order of 10 satay skewers.
