Find yourself hankering for something sweet late at night? You’ll rejoice to know that over at Dessert First, you’ll be able to satisfy a wide range of dessert cravings.
Situated along Liang Seah Street, this humble dessert shop is home to a vasty array of delicious Cantonese desserts. The owners claim that these hot and cold treats are made using only the highest quality ingredients.
While the desserts here are predominantly Cantonese in origin, Dessert First also serves desserts such as waffles and shaved ice desserts.
Mango Snow Ice
To help beat the heat, we highly recommend getting their Mango Snow Ice (S$7.50). What you get is a mountain of finely shaved ice and surrounding it the base of it is a generous helping of cubed mango, nata de coco and pearls filled with mango syrup.
We found the dessert to be very satisfying and the mango very ripe and sweet.
Yam Paste with Pumpkin and Gingko
For a hit of nostalgia, we went for their Yam Paste with Pumpkin and Gingko (S$4.80). A popular Teochew dessert, this paste-like dessert comprises finely mashed taro mixed with rough dices of tender pumpkin, ginkgo nuts and a generous ladle of sweet coconut cream over top.
Without sparing a second thought, we crowned this our favourite. The paste was smooth and very fine. The ingredients were fresh and overall it was not too sweet. The coconut cream gave the dessert richness and a subtle savouriness which bolded well with the sweet taro.
Double-Boiled White Fungus with Papaya
The Double-boiled White Fungus with Papaya (S$4.80) works up quite a treat if you’d rather opt for something a little less on the sweet side.
White fungus, or snow fungus, is known to possess anti-inflammatory properties and is good for nourishing the lungs. Some even go as far as to speculate that the collagen content in snow fungus is comparable to that of bird’s nest, calling it the “poor man’s bird’s nest”—which sort of explains why they could afford to be so generous with the snow fungus.
Dessert First opens till 1:00 am from Mondays to Thursdays and until 2:00 am from Fridays and Saturdays.
