Phase Two: 5 Popular Singapore Bars that Have Closed Down

Bars That Closed in Phase 2When news broke that circuit breaker will be happening in Singapore, many were concerned about the lack of social interaction and outdoor activities. The constraints imposed caused many of of us to adjust our lifestyles, but for a handful of Singaporeans—more specifically business owners, there were bigger and more severe problems.

We’re thankful that Phase 2 has allowed gradual re-openings and we can now slowly ease back to our usual routines. However, the pandemic has already taken a hefty toll for quite a number of businesses. Sadly, the circumstances have driven some of our favourite spots to eventual closure.

Read on to find out some of the beloved bars that have shut down during Phase 2 and their plans for the future.

1. Freehouse

This hipster hole-in-the-wall shop that used to be located on the second storey within a shophouse along Boon Tat Street shut its doors in mid November 2020. It’s a piece of sad news for us who appreciate their 16 rotating beers on tap.

Fret not for we have some good news for fans of their craft beer! They will be reopening in a new venue in mid-December 2020 so do keep your eyes peeled.

2. Sum Yi Tai

Sum Yi Tai was around for six years and was a fairly popular spot for after-work dinner and drinks. This oriental bar re-interpreted traditional, communal-style Chinese dining by serving them as tapas instead.

Unfortunately, the high rental has pushed them into the tough decision of shutting its doors as the business became unviable. The team is hoping to reopen in the future at a new location and we are crossing our fingers that they will bounce back!

3. Maggie Joan’s Dining & Bar

This hidden modern European restaurant was located in an alleyway off Gemmill Lane and exuded underground vibes that their loyal customers loved very much.

They are no longer operating, but guests who have been there will always hold fond memories of their exquisite nosh that were made using seasonal ingredients and the range of alcoholic beverages.

4. Oxwell & Co

In mid-July 2020, Oxwell & Co. bid goodbye to its location at Ann Siang Hill where they were for the past seven years.

Their divine food and drinks will definitely be sorely missed, but thankfully, Oxwell & Co still does pop-ups. Currently, they are having a festive pop-up over at Clan Cafe, seven days a week till the last day of 2020 so you know where to catch ’em!

5. Operation Dagger

Operation Dagger

This speakeasy was well-loved for its major cloak-and-dagger vibes and their repertoire of elevated cocktails. For those who’ve patronised this bar before, it’s really not hard to understand why they’re ranked as World’s 30th Best Bar. A title that’s truly remarkable and utterly impressive.

It’s a pity that they have closed their location along Ann Siang Hill… But Operation Dagger will soon be re-opening at a new venue. Cheers to a new beginning!
