Conveniently located at 17 North Canal Road (right beside Lucky Saigon) is an unassuming local eatery called Lucky Cafe. It is a 10-minute walk from Zouk Singapore and a five-minute walk from Canvas Club. The stall is open 24/7 — so do consider visiting it the next time you’re hungry, or want a quick bite to sober up after partying.

We recently made a trip down to try their Marmite Chicken Rice (S$6.50) and we were not disappointed! As we made our visit around 1:00 am, the weather was cooling and the atmosphere was laid back.

Note: Lucky Cafe is quite easy to spot, all you have to do is to look out for the fairy lights or brightly-painted green walls.

Even before doing the taste test, the idea of having a marmite-infused dish brought a sense of nostalgia. As a child, the adults in my family would often add marmite into my plain porridge. As we tucked into the dish, I was quickly reminded of Korean Fried Chicken although my friend commented that it reminded him of coffee-rubbed ribs. The chicken cubes were drenched in a sweet, sticky consistency, and we could taste the slight saltiness at the tip of our tongues.

The chicken’s skin was crispy and the meat was tender. The sauce was mildly spicy from the chilli padi, and we reckon that kids will love this dish due to its sweetness (assuming they can handle some spice). The rice was not overcooked and had the right amount of moisture to it – which was a plus point, as it definitely helped in the palatableness of the entire dish. Just like any other tze char dish, this dish would have been perfect if it was served with a fried egg.

All in all, if you’re not expecting a gourmet-standard dish, this dish will do the trick with its generous portion and good protein-to-carb ratio ensuring you wouldn’t feel too jerlak.
