5 New Bars in Singapore that Bravely Opened During Lockdown

Bars that opened during Circuit Breaker

For many, the start of the new decade in 2020 marked the birth of many hopeful beginnings. New hobbies, new fitness goals, new business openings and the like. Then the Coronavirus pandemic happened and plans were forced to a chokehold. Though it might appear silly and borderline insane to allow said plans to take flight during the crisis; some local businesses did so anyway and we’re incredibly glad to report that they are nowhere near phased. Here are 5 bars that bravely opened during Circuit Breaker you need to know about.

Burn – Woodfired Restaurant & Bar

What makes Burn – Woodfired Restaurant & Bar tick is the fact that nearly everything on their menu is charred in their specially-crafted wood-fired brick oven. Specialising in anything from breakfast and brunch fare, fire-roasted pizzas, meats and more, this mod-Australian restaurant-slash-bar is one to consider. We’ve heard that their lamb is excellent and their selection of roasted veggie dishes will even have meat-eaters swooning.

Newly-opened Laut was birthed from a raw collaborative effort between buddies Frank Shen (owner of American Taproom) and Leon Tan (formerly from Native and Nutmeg & Clove) to honour the tastes, cultures and history from around region.

Many of their cocktails and signature dishes take their cue from history, particularly during periods in history where spice played a crucial role in civilisation. Expect an eclectic array of Asian-inspired dishes and cocktails made using native ingredients such as dragonfruit, buah keluak, peppers from Borneo, pineapples from Sarawak and so on.

On the food front, many folks swear by their Aged Chicken Wings, which although looks simple, is anything but. Sago House

Equipped with their bare hands and a deep-rooted belief in the concept of reusability, up-cycling, and good old fashioned hustle, three friends—Jay, Desiree and George—banded together to build (yes, build) an eclectic bar that also doubles up as a creative space hidden away on the top level of a Sago Street shophouse. About 80% of the materials used to construct Sago House was either recycled or up-cycled from unloved items. Drinks-wise, their drinks program features a weekly rotating menu of cocktails concocted from native ingredients found at local markets.
