Hainanese curry rice, a popular comfort food among locals, was first created back in the early 1900s. During the British colonial rule, many Hainanese chefs were engaged by the British and Peranakans. What ensued next was an interesting gastronomic fusion of cultures i.e. British pork chop and Peranakan ingredients gave rise to Singaporeans’ beloved curry rice.
Known for their method of cutting ingredients into bite-sized pieces using a pair of scissors (as suggested by the stall name), Beach Road Scissors Cut Curry Rice is almost a household name. Thanks to its late-night operation hours, it is easily one of Singapore’s most renowned supper destinations.
Select from a myriad of ingredients to accompany your rice. Ranging from braised pork belly and crispy fried chicken wings to beancurd puffs, stewed cabbage and more! With the wide array of dishes, you might just find yourself taking a while to decide what to order.

We decided to get the braised pork belly, crispy chicken chop, fried egg and cabbage. These ingredients were then covered by a generous serving of their special curry and a sweet, viscous, almost molasses-like sauce sauce.
A few thoughts following our initial bite… We noticed that contrary to its vibrant, deep-orange appearance; the curry was pretty light, especially after being mixed with the sweet dark sauce. The curry and dark sauce combo provided a solid flavour foundation that was neither too bland nor overpowering, allowing the respective ingredients to still shine through.
The chicken chop was covered in a thin layer of batter, giving it a crispy exterior while the meat remained juicy. The braised pork belly was flavourful, slightly fatty but was easy to cut through. The cabbage was delicious when paired together with the sauces. Finally, the sunny side egg was crisp along the edges and provided a buttery texture.
Overall, the meal was satisfying and for such a filling portion of food, it only cost us S$5.80 a plate. We were also impressed by how consistent they were with their instantaneous ingredient and sauce top-ups whenever a specific item (or sauce) begins to run low. So regardless of how late you arrive, you can always be certain that your favourite items are always available.
