The season of gifting (and sales) is upon us, and new, affordable, award-winning wines have reached our shores just in time too! So if you’re stressing over your Christmas shopping list, take a deep breath and read on because this list has everything for all your wine-lover pals.
Bottles & Bottles Singapore recently introduced four new portfolios that joined their prestigious list of agencies – Joseph Mellot and Champagne Lombard from France, Domini Veneti from Italy and Bodegas Faustino from Spain. Each portfolio emphasises different characteristics of key wine regions whilst remaining affordable and appealing to wine drinkers of all levels.
Joseph Mellot
Fourth-generation family-owned Loire Valley winery Joseph Mellot is the only winery that owns wines and produces wines from the seven main appellations of the Central Loire region. They were also the region’s first domaines to obtain the ISO 40001 certification for environmental management and the HVE (Haute Valeur Environnementale) certification, awarded by the French Ministry of Agriculture.
They’re best known for their incredibly crisp Sauvignon Blancs; as their grapes undergo a pneumatic press that ensures only the purest liquid is extracted. We loved the complex Joseph Mellot Sancerre Blanc Domaine Des Emois 2020 ($71), which was elegant and fruity with tropical fruits and citrus. Shop all Joseph Mellot Wines here.
Champagne Lombard
Hailing from Épernay, Champagne Lombard is well-known for having the most Grand Cru plots. They take a four-pronged approach to winemaking where careful attention is given to the soil, topography, climate and viticulture.
If you’re shopping for wine enthusiasts, you can consider their Terroir range which highlights the mineral identity of certain soils. For more affordable options, you can shop all Champagne Lombard Wines here.
Domini Veneti
Hailing from the world-renowned Valpolicella Classica region in Italy, Domini Veneti is known for its excellent Amarones.
Choose from classic red that won’t go wrong, like the Valpolicella DOC Classico Superiore 2019 (S$31) or even the Domini Veneti Vigneti Di Jago Amarone Valpolicella Classico 2015 ($99) if you feel like splurging a little. Shop the entire collection here.
Bodegas Faustino
You may have heard of family-owned Spanish winery Bodegas Faustino, which has over 160 years of history, and produces excellent Reserva and Gran Reserva wines. Its iconic Faustino I Gran Reserva 2011 (S$58) even claimed the most sold DOCa Rioja Gran Reserva in the world for the 2010 vintage, with nearly 40% of wine sales in its category.
The organic Faustino Rioja Vino Ecologico 2018 (S$35) is another affordable alternative loaded with blackcurrant and leathery notes. For more, click here.
*Bonus* Wakefield Taylors Family Wines
Although the celebrated award-winning Australian winery is no stranger to Bottles & Bottles consumers, Wakefield Taylors Family Wines only just introduced its Masterstroke Series at the ProWine convention on our shores a while back. The series was named as a reflection of the winery’s meticulous craft behind viticulture and the pronounced expressions of terroir and grape varietals across the wine regions. Each wine is a single varietal wine that spotlights a regional terroir.
The Wakefield Masterstroke Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 ($58) has notes of blackcurrant, mint and dark chocolate; with a lovely and fresh aroma of violets and spice courtesy of the cooler climate in Coonawarra. On the other hand, the Wakefield Masterstroke Shiraz 2019 ($58) boasts an abundance of dark cherry and plum flavours with an opulent expression of oak, spicy complexity and sweet fruits that lead to a full-bodied finish with drying tannins.
