An Honest Review on McDonald’s Asian Fusion Dishes: Is it Worth Trying?

Macdonalds_Salted Egg Yolk Fries_2McDonald’s Singapore has jumped on the Asian fusion bandwagon and introduced several new dishes, namely Salted Egg Yolk Loaded Fries, Peach Pie and Pandan Soft Serve.

Are these new Asian-inspired items worth the hype? We made a trip to a 24/7 McDonald’s outlet in Singapore to sample them and here’s our low-down on these limited edition snacks.

Salted Egg Yolk Loaded Fries (S$4.10)

Macdonalds_Salted Egg Yolk Fries_1We caught a whiff of salted egg yolk as we unboxed the piping hot fries. The amount of smooth salted egg yolk sauce poured over the golden crispy french fries was generous and we were excited to dig in.

At first bite, we were hit by an explosion of unpleasant flavours. The creamy tangy sauce reminded us hollandaise dressing with hints of vinegar. We can’t believe we are saying this, but it actually tasted like burnt rubber!

Honestly speaking, this Salted Egg Yolk Loaded Fries (S$4.10) was a sheer disappointment. We do love salted egg yolk, but McDonald’s rendition is a far cry from the real deal. The only resemblance to salted egg yolk is the sauce’s colour. Needless to say, we did not finish the fries.

Our Verdict: 2.5/10

Peach Pie (S$1.40)

Upon sinking our teeth into the flaky pink-coloured pastry, warm peach filling oozed out and it reminded us of Pokka Ice Peach Tea. The Peach Pie (S$1.40) tasted artificially sweet and depending on your palate, it might be a hit or miss. It is also worth mentioning that the texture of the pastry was softer than the regular apple pie. We would say it’s a one-off novelty, but some people seem to really love it.

Our Verdict: 5/10

Pandan Soft Serve (S$1)

Macdonalds_Pandan Soft ServeFortunately, Maccas’ Pandan Soft Serve* (S$1) was the saving grace. A perfect treat to beat the sweltering heat in Singapore, the only cause for concern was how quickly it melted before we got our shot for instagram story.

If you grew up relishing the famous Pandan Chiffon cake from Bengawan Solo, this will evoke nostalgia of some sort. The pandan was not overpowering and was a clever infusion to the vanilla-based ice cream.

Our Verdict: 9/10

Available at all outlets islandwide and via McDelivery and GrabFood, while stocks last.
*Pandan Soft Serve is available only at McDonald’s outlets with dessert kiosk.
