EDM Throwback Songs: 10 Club Hits that 90s Kids All Remember (& Miss)

It goes without saying that for any 90s kid, clubbing nowadays is a far cry from what it used to be back when we were the ones dominating the dance floor. Back then—we’re talking back when Zouk Singapore was still at its former, original premise—we had songs such as ‘Save The World’, ‘Don’t You Worry Child’ and ‘Gold Skies’, songs that actually made you feel things.

Taking you back to the glory days during the point when most of us were in our late teens, when clubbing was a weekly affair, when having a drink (or ten) and dancing it off was the only respite our minds knew to escape the seemingly endless cycle of school work, project work and examinations, here is a list of our all-time favourite EDM throwback songs.

1. Animals by Martin Garrix

This song dropped in 2013 and it absolutely ruled the airwaves, launching young Martin Garrix into superstardom. It’s rhythmic, minimalist drop was unique for its time and gave rise to the big room house sub-genre.

Heavily sampling the iconic bassline and riff from Boney M’s 1979 hit “Gotta Go Home.”, Barbra Streisand was a collaborative project between North American DJs A-Trak and Armand Van Helden. The duo debuted this disco house single at the Miami Winter Music Conference 2010 and it pretty much ruled every club in the world since then.

3. Give Me Everything by Pitbull feat. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer

Shout out to the people who’ve ever been spontaneously grabbed and said “HEY!” to whenever the chorus of this song drops.

Conceptualised by Afrojack, this oddly contagious EDM hit sees the likes of Pitbull spitting fast-paced lyrics in between melodies as well as Ne-Yo and Nayer providing the hook to this groovy number.

4. In The Dark by DEV

“In the Dark” was written by Dev alongside American hip-hop duo, The Cataracs. The song evokes sexiness to the highest degree but is also tasteful and melodic.

5. Don’t You Worry Child by Swedish House Mafia feat. John Martin

“Don’t You Worry Child” is the sixth and the final single released by Swedish House Mafia before their breakup in 2013. The song speaks about innocence, relating a nostalgic story of loss, heartbreak and the pains of growing up.

For more of the feels, give the acoustic version a listen.

6. Mr Saxobeat by Alexandra Stan

“Mr. Saxobeat” is the debut single from Romanian singer Alexandra Stan. This was pretty much a one-hit-wonder for her, seeing as to how she didn’t really take off after that. The song’s lyrics are hugely flirtatious and suggestive but groovy nonetheless.

7. On The Floor by Jennifer Lopez feat. Pitbull

Recorded by American diva, Jennifer Lopez and featuring guest vocals by Pitbull, this feet-stomper was released as the lead single from her 7th studio album, “LOVE?” and became a massive success worldwide.

It incorporates latin beats, strong bass and dreamy melodies.

You can’t deny that at some point you were obsessed with this song. We know because we were too.

The song’s electronic, fast-paced tunes and catchy chorus propelled it to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it LMFAO’s first single to ever top the chart.

9. Shots by LMFAO feat. Lil Jon

Apart from singing about drinks, doing shots and getting f***ed up, there really isn’t much value in this song. In hindsight, it does boast a heart-thumping beat, a sickeningly addictive riff and catchy lyrics.

Sia and David Guetta’s massive track “Titanium” acts as an anthem against the oppressors, the critics and the bullies. Chartwise, it did very well for itself, even managing to become a top ten hit in 17 countries.
