An institution in itself, Fong Seng Nasi Lemak in Clementi is a godsend for night owls as it operates till 4.00AM every day. While their nasi lemak might not be life-changing, it still draws a strong crowd.
The reason lies in the fact that it is located in close proximity to the National University of Singapore (NUS), making it a popular supper haunt for students as well as folks who live and work close by.
To better accommodate students and to keep one step ahead of their competitors, they maintain relatively affordable prices and boast an extensive array of ingredients.
They offer the standard coconut-infused rice as well as trays upon trays of fried and saucy ingredients.
Think, your standard fried fish, chicken wings, otah, ikan bilis, fried egg as well as slightly more unconventional options such as luncheon meat, hash browns, chicken cutlet, fish cake, teriyaki saba fish and more.
Accompanying the aromatic coconut rice, we added a fried chicken wing, otah, fried egg, peanuts and two pieces of fried kunning fish. The price for it all came out to be only S$5.40.
Among the various ingredients we chose, the chicken wing was hands down, the most memorable. The crispy fried batter was light and well seasoned, and the meat within was succulent and tender.
Fong Seng Nasi Lemak’s Homemade Sambal
Another crucial component that really amped up the entire meal was their house-made nasi lemak sambal.
The piquancy of the sambal went exceptionally well with the rice and provided an element of umami and sweetness. It balanced out the various savoury items very well, enhancing the overall flavour of the dish.
We also really liked how crispy the kunning fish was. We were fortunate to receive a batch that only just came out of the fryer. It was so crispy that we even ate the head!
To be fair, the food isn’t all that exceptional. However, it is worth a pit-stop if you are in the area at ungodly hours and need supper pronto.
