What You Can Expect at i Light Singapore 2019

2019 marks a great milestone for Singapore. It has been 200 years since Sir Stamford Raffles founded modern Singapore!

An exciting series of events is lined-up this year, including the bicentennial edition of i Light. Taking place from 28th January to 24th February, i Light Singapore 2019 is set to take you on a multi-sensory interactive journey, where you will travel through a time vortex – reliving Singapore’s rich history and development, as well as how she has connected with the world over the last 700 years.

iLight Singapore 2019From its geographical coverage to addition of light installations, the light art festival has expanded in several ways since its inaugural kick off in 2010. This year’s call for submissions received 249 submissions from local and international artists within the span of two months – the largest response recorded since the festival’s inauguration. Curated to the theme ‘Bridges of Time’, you can expect to see a total of 32 artworks, comprising 31 sustainable light art installations and a spectacular multimedia show.

2. Installations not to be missed

i Light Singapore_Rainbow Connection I Light_Lee Yun Qin Installation #3 – Rainbow Connection by Yun

“The art installation is like the social fabric that holds individuals together – every container may be different, but I believe it can come together to create something that is bigger and that people can hold dear to their hearts.”
– Yun, danamic.

Created by homegrown industrial designer Lee Yun Qin (also known by her artist name Yun), The Rainbow Connection features an island of dangling upcycled PET containers. With the clever use of solar-powered lighting, a surreal landscape of light and motion has been created – evoking images of the sea, sky and forests while they sway in the wind. Prior to the festival, this project has been designed to allow public participation whereby 800 cookie containers have been designed during workshops held back in November 2018.

i Light Singapore_DUNEInstallation #15 – DUNE by Daan Roosegaarde

This is a great opportunity to capture Instagram-worthy portrait shots. Imagine walking through a lalang field (known as cogon grass to some) and gently brushing your fingers against them. Dune is an interactive landscape which brightens according to your movement and touch, therefore enhancing social interaction whilst aiming to bridge the gap between nature and technology.

Location: OUE Bayfront

i Light Singapore_Bridges of TimeInstallation #25 – Bridges of Time by ACTLD (Belgium)

An immersive multimedia show, Bridges of Time narrates a poetic story of a universal traveller who has sailed across time and space and set foot into Singapore. A scenographic treat of light, sound and projection awaits while you discover and rediscover Singapore through different centuries. The stark contrast of ancient landscape against the contemporary skyline will leave you in awe.

i Light Singapore_City Gazing SingaporeInstallation #13 – City Gazing Singapore by VOUW

Dubbed City Gazing Singapore, this installation will be suspended above you, inviting you to turn your gaze up towards the sky. Watch as the light illuminates and portray how Singapore has expanded through the years. From a couple of key arterial roads to the international hub it is today – we can’t help but wonder, what would Singapore be like in a few years from now?

Location: The Lawn @ Marina Bay

i Light Singapore_The Cat in the GardenInstallation #18 – The Cat in the Garden

Alluding to a rainbow, The Cat in the Garden is a visual and sound projection that will allow you to travel through seven colours of the light spectrum. As snippets of Singapore’s daily life and nature adorn the Merlion, reminisce early days of a simpler world and welcome a multicultural modern world filled with festivity and life.

Location: Merlion Park

Situated on Bayfront event space, Prudential Marina Bay Carnival will be ongoing till 24th March 2019* from 4pm to 11pm daily. What’s a carnival if you do not play games and go on rides, right? It’s free entry into carnival grounds, but you’ll decide how much to spend on credits.

P.S. The Mach 5, the most thrilling ride in our opinion, goes for 14 credits.
