KOMYUNITI, YOTEL Singapore: Creative Cocktails along Orchard Road

Located on the 10th floor of YOTEL Singapore, KOMYUNITI is an oasis for one to escape the bustle of the city, to connect over tipples and good, tasty food that won’t burn a hole in your wallet. It’s conveniently located along Orchard Road and opens till late daily.

This unassuming bar is helmed by Food and Beverage Manager As’ad Isnin a person of many merits having won competitions run by Bacardi and 42 Below Vodka in the past as well as Head Chef Mark Tai—a visionary whom you can trust to take your taste buds on a sensory journey.

The pride and joy of KOMYUNITI, their handcrafted cocktails sing of finesse and an ambrosial quality that transcends that of your average bar. There isn’t a consistent theme that dominates the menu but rather a hodgepodge of influences, techniques and flavour profiles thought up by As’ad himself.

The drinks are creative, cheeky, minimalistic but ultimately exude elegance. They are all formulated through endless trial and error using a wide array of techniques, ingredients and liquor infusions many might deem bizarre.

KOMYUNITI presents a completely curated cocktail menu that is sure to excite, intrigue and inspire even the most discerning palate. Here, the cocktails served are broken down into six different categories.

For cocktails that emphasise bright, fruity, citrusy and floral notes, go for their range of drinks under ‘Yuzu’ and ‘Sound Of Ukulele’. If you’re keen on the bar’s more experimental concoctions, go straight for the drinks under ‘Cleanest Room’, ‘Streets of Harajuku’ and ‘Fish Tank’—on there, they have savoury cocktails that feature unconventional ingredients such shiitake mushroom and smoked salmon.

What we find most fascinating about their cocktails is that they are all spirit-forward, highlighting their broad range of house spirit infusions. Yes, it is also worth mentioning that they do everything themselves from infusing botanicals (of which they grow in their own balcony), fruits and spices into their spirits, formulating their own unique bitters to making their own ice.

Cocktail 1: Lost Not Found

Appropriate for any celebration, the sweet and bubbly Lost Not Found features a house-infused Herb liqueur, fermented strawberry, botanical herbs and topped with Prosecco.

Perfect as a starter, this cocktail is refreshing and sweet with nuances of fresh strawberries. Approachable and easy on the palate, this cocktail is ideal for ladies who prefer opting for sweeter options.

Cocktail 2: Mellon Down

An obvious favourite, the Mellon Down—a play on the words ‘mellow down’—boasts a mellow, fruity flavour and is easy to drink. It comprises melon milk-washed whisky, wine cordial and fresh dill.

Cocktail 3: How Are Yee?

Inspired by the chill, tropical vibes of the Carribean, the fruity and spice-forward ‘How Are Yee?’ will have you feeling like you’re lounging in the Bahamas.

Spice plays a huge part in this with things like clove, curry, cinnamon and bitter chocolate taking centre stage in its predominant profile. You will also find sweet undertones of coconut, banana and herbs giving the cocktail a bright, aromatic lift.

Cocktail 4: La Negra Rita

While the cocktail’s jet-black appearance may seem off-putting and potentially deadly, the flavours that this citrus-forward cocktail presents is anything but.

The foundation of the La Negri Rita starts off with a shot of their house-infused kaffir lime tequila followed by fresh lime juice, charcoal syrup and orange liqueur.

Shaken vigorously, the finished cocktail is carefully strained and topped with citrus foam, black salt, orange flower mist.

Cocktail 5: Fungoose

Venturing deeper into the realm of the exotic, you’ll find The Fungoose among the bar’s most highly recommended. A drink that boasts umami flavours stemming from a variety of mushroom products, this savoury-tasting drink is bound to intrigue.

This umami-dense cocktail features shiitake mushroom-infused whisky, fermented corn water, simple syrup and truffle oil.

Cocktail 6: White Wash Tsunami

A drink that reeks of insanity and a certain sense of creativity that only select minds can come up with, the White Wash Tsunami is a savoury, vodka-based cocktail that contains a broad range of aromatics and citrus. The kicker? Smoked salmon froth—yes, you read it right, smoked salmon.

One of KOMYUNITI’s signature cocktails, the birth of the White Wash Tsunami came about when Head Bartender As’ad was challenged to come up with a unique cocktail using salmon. We won’t lie, it does take a while to get used to the flavour of it and the sweet macaron served alongside it does well to balance out the funkiness of it.

Cocktail 7: Comic Coffee

The perfect night cap to send you on your way is the Comic Coffee. This robust, caffeine-packed kicker comprises butter washed vodka, citrus, dark cherry, soya bean curd and salted espresso.

Designed to look like a harmless shot of espresso, the flavours that greet your tongue are way more intense. The drink encompasses the profiles of salty, bitter and citrusy and even comes with a surprise at the bottom—soy bean pudding.
