It’s a dish that’s hard to dislike and is one that can be enjoyed at any time of the day. Craving a plate for supper? Here are 6 late-night chicken rice joints that’ll satisfy those craving in a jiffy.

What originally began as a nothing more than a mere stall in Chinatown back in 1979 is now a group of eight restaurants. At the beginning, Boon Tong Kee only specialised in Cantonese chicken rice, fish head and deep-fried tofu, but has now grown by leaps and bounds offering a plethora of zi char delights.

You can trust that Singaporeans know their chicken and you can definitely trust them they know where the best ones are. That’s why Boon Tong Kee ranks high on our list.

If you reside in the Toa Payoh area, you’ll likely have come across this popular stall at least once. Although their main offering is chicken rice, you’ll come to find that that isn’t what causes the snaking queues.

Ironically, it’s their crispy fried chicken wings that command the crowds—their roasted chicken rice comes second. Crispy, fragrant and juicy beyond compare, these deep-fried delights are certainly worth making a trip down for.

Address: 75 Lor 5 Toa Payoh, #01-31, Singapore 310075

Yet another popular chicken rice destination, how Five Star separates itself from the pack is that they use strictly kampung chickens only.

Kampung chickens—chickens that are free to roam about—are much tastier, less fatty and a lot more tender than those mass bred in factories, and the difference shows. The result is a chicken that’s aromatic, fork-tender, and succulent.

Paired with savoury rice and a trio of sauces made in-house from fresh ingredients, you’ll experience the difference almost instantaneously.

Address: 419 River Valley Road, Singapore 248318

A franchise with two stalls located within Ang Mo Kio central itself, Qi Le Boneless Chicken Rice is quite frankly, one of the best coffee shop chicken rice you’ll find anywhere.

For starters, it’s super affordable and secondly, their chicken boasts fork-tender succulence and the sweet, savoury, umami-dense sauce that it gets dressed with is so remarkably flavoured that you could literally have it alone with plain rice.

In addition, you cannot miss out on their “soup of the day” which puts conventional chicken rice soups to shame. A simple soup brewed using peanuts and chicken feet, the flavour is immense and pairs exceptionally well with the meal.

Hidden in a coffee shop located at the end of Geylang Lorong 18 at the junction that connects to the main Geylang Road, Shuang Shun Chicken Rice is where you’ll find one of the richest and most indulgent plates of chicken rice around.

This contender is greasy but in a tasty, you-can-literally-dream-about-it kind of way. Their rice is well infused and generously oiled; chicken liver (should you choose to include that) is creamy with no foul smell; and chilli sauce is nuanced and tweaked with a bit of lime to give it a slight zing.
