The year may have only just begun but already there’s plenty to get stoked about. From newly-opened neighbourhood late-night dessert joints and bars to drink-related events galore, you best believe 2021 is off to an epic start.

1. Desert Dessert: New Late-Night Gelato Spot In AMK

The departure of OCD (Obsessive Chocolate Desire) Cafe to its current premise in Jalan Besar brought tears to many Ang Mo Kio residents but that sadness was short-lived with the opening of Desert Dessert.

Located a literal stone’s throw away from Mayflower Market in Ang Mo Kio, this new and humble gelato joint opens till 12AM on weekends and though their selection are limited to 10 varieties of gelato, they hit the spot nonetheless.

Flavours range between the classics such as Strawberry, Butterscotch Caramel and Earl Grey to premium options including Sea Salt, Mango Passion and more.

2. Emi’s Waffle & Gelato: New Late-Night Gelato Spot in Tampines

East-siders don’t need to feel left out because you too have a new late-night gelato parlour to get stoked about. Emi’s Waffle & Gelato over in Tampines West is the newest dessert entrant to the district and though it may be small in size, they hit hard offering 18 different flavours of gelato along with an assortment of cakes. They operate until 12 AM on most days and until 2 AM on weekends, so if you find yourself in the middle of an alcohol-free sabbatical but with a hankering to hang out late, you know where to go.

3. Half Pipe Skate Bar: Happy Hour From 4PM to 8PM Daily


Doubling up as a skateboard peripheral, merchandise and equipment store as well as a coffeehouse and craft beer joint, newly-opened Half Pipe Skate Bar at TripleOne Somerset has been making waves as of late and for a very good reason. Whether you’re a seasoned skater or not, you can just as easily pop in for a killer Flat White or better yet, a craft beer. While they may not serve beers on tap (yet), they have a wide array of local and international craft brews in their chiller. Hanging around Somerset during midday? Happy Hour begins at 4 PM and lasts till 8 PM.  Pop in anytime between then to enjoy 10% off all beers.

4. Heart of Darkness: Get Sloshed on Mondays With “Hoppy Monday”

Mondays will now look a little less gloomy with the introduction of Hoppy Monday, Heart Of Darkness’ newest weekly event that will run every Monday at their Keong Saik Road outpost starting from 2 PM in the afternoon until closing. During “Hoppy Monday”, guests get to enjoy discounted pricing on tasting flights, with four small pours of the whichever beer the appointed tap hands deem tastiest for S$25++ or any six beers for S$35++. 

If you haven’t yet visited Heart Of Darkness (and it’s about time you did), be wowed by a whopping 25 taps encompassing the brewery’s many creative brews as well as beers from local breweries included in the special. Flights are accompanied by Heart of Darkness’ hearty bar snacks and comfort food, with a special 10% discount available for Mondays only on the Black Angus Prime Rib.

5. JOMO Bar: New Holland Village Bar Offering $6 Pints

Holland Village newcomer, JOMO Bar—which stands for “Join Or Miss Out”—is a neighbourhood bar, restaurant and bottle shop that’s all about offering diners (and tipplers) a high-quality dining experience coupled with a wide array of drinks sold at extremely accessible price points—we’re talking S$6 pints and S$30 all-you-can-drink wines during Happy Hour and S$8 pints (and wine by the glass) before or beyond the window. Their food is kept pretty casual ranging from bar bites such as Popcorn Chicken, Crispy Pork Belly Bites to mains such as burgers, hot dogs, steaks and more. Nothing overly fancy, just things that go well with a tipple.

6. Set of Six: New Speakeasy On Craig Road

Inspired by the life and tales of Joseph Conrad, one of history’s greatest novelists, Set of Six is a cocktail bar that takes adventure seekers on an elegant trip back to a time when Sea Voyages were common and Speakeasy Soirees ruled the twilight hours. Despite only opening on the 8th of January this year, they’re already off to a very good start.

Driven by expertly-crafted cocktails inspired by the late novelist’s tales of courage and splendour, and a masterfully curated food menu designed by Executive Chef Gonzalo Landin or next-door Spanish restaurant, Binomio, Set of Six sets out to bring a new dimension to Singapore’s cosmopolitan night scene.

7. The Hours After: Art Exhibition At Gillman Barracks

Conceptualised by a collective of artists working in five different timezones around the world, The Hours After is a counter-normative art presentation that delves into the cosmic and the mundane in the wake of breakdowns and slippages from “normalcy” as a result of the global pandemic that gripped the world in 2020. Centred around a night-time gallery experience over at Gillman Barracks, the week-long exhibition will include installations, videos, sound pieces as well as limited-time-only works.

8. Three Buns: Monday Industry Night

Every Monday starting from 5 PM until late, professionals in the service, hospitality, airline and travel & tourism industry are in for a treat over at award-winning burger joint, Three Buns at Robertson Quay. Plenty of drink and food perks await. Think wine bottles at S$40++, spirit bottles with 6 mixers for S$109++, beer buckets at S$42++ and burger meals—Baby Huey, Omni Burger and Dawg—that cost a fraction of their original prices. What a time to be working in those sectors, huh?
