It’s hard to miss the iconic building of Potato Head Singapore when you stroll down Keong Saik Road. We have all probably been there at some point in our lives, but what you probably didn’t know is that it houses a speakeasy on its third floor – Studio 1939.
As you head up the stairs of Potato Head Singapore, one might overlook the entrance to Studio 1939. Instead, look out for the inconspicuous signage on the door to your left, and you’ll find yourselves in a decadent drinking den with serious music room vibes. We heard a Japanese hip-hop theme might be in the pipeline, including displays of some sweet kicks for sneaker heads.
The speakeasy prides itself on its ever-changing menu created by Head Bartender Gavin Teravasan, who invents unique cocktails using some of the freshest seasonal ingredients. We got to sample the current menu of craft tipples – The Time Machine; paying homage to the history of cocktail making. On one side, you’ll find a series of familiar classics, rivalled by their reimagined contemporary (some say better) versions on the other side.
Venus Pickford ($25): Our Personal Favourite at Studio 1939
Based off the classic Mary Pickford, this reinvented version is made of Hendrick’s Gin and Monkey 47 Sloe Gin instead of rum. In addition, it features more fruit flavours that come from the Luxardo Apricot Brandy, fresh Lime Juice and Studio 1939’s Strawberry Cordial instead of the tropical pineapple flavours.
Complete with a touch of Clarified Milk, then carbonated with CO2, you get a cocktail full of florals and botanicals that’s sweet and refreshing as a whole. This is also Gavin’s personal fave! Ours too, #NGL.
Missionary Style ($23)
This tropical cocktail is inspired by the Mary Downfall, made from Studio 1939 Buttered Rum, Plantation Pineapple Rum, Peach Liqueur, Indonesian Black Tea Syrup, fresh Lime Juice, topped with Black Tea foam. Refreshing, sweet, and a definite crowdpleaser. It’s smooth and easy-drinking, with lovely aromatics and an extra creamy mouthfeel from the foam infused with black tea, egg white and sugar.
4 Leaf Clover ($23)
Move over Clover Club. This new-and-improved version has a lower ABV, with less of the Raspberry Vermouth and more Hendrick’s Gin, allowing the botanicals to be more pronounced on the palate. Completed with Raspberry Liqueur and Picked Raspberry Tincture. Think of this as an entry-level dirty, dry martini that’s sweet yet slightly bitter from the lingering taste of the pickled raspberries.
French Montana ($23)
French Montana is made from Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, Studio 1939 Calamansi Champagne Cordial, fresh Lemon Juice, and Egg White. Yes, you guessed it, this tipple is inspired by the French 75! Strong notes of Calamansi (which we loved!), yet not overly sour. Instead, it had a smooth, creamy consistency from the egg white. So, citrus lovers, this is your go-to!
Mr. Morningstar ($23)
Gavin’s take on the traditional El Diablo, and inspired by the hit TV show Lucifer; this concoction is just about as yummy as Tom Ellis. Made with Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum instead of Tequila, Yaguara Cachaca, Mathilde Cassis Liqueur, fresh Lime Juice and Egg White. Expect perfumy aromatics, floral notes, smooth and creamy, with a lovely sugar cane finish.
If you’re ever in the Keong Saik area, pop by Studio 1939 to give their themed craft tipples a try! With its evolving drinks list, you’re sure to be in for a surprise each visit. P.s. You can also order food at Studio 1939 from the Potato Head menu.
