Ready to celebrate in a ghastly manner? Aptly named The Deceased and located within the heart of Kuala Lumpur, this macabre-themed cocktail bar is not for the faint-hearted. But those who love horror would find The Deceased oddly satisfying and need not wait till Halloween.
This watering hole presents the perfect opportunity to immerse in all things horror – think inauspicious aesthetics, cursed crimson liquor and drinks served with a severed hand.
The Deceased’s quaint interior has retained the building’s original and beautiful colonial-era facade. It has been thoughtfully designed to its nightmare theme, fulfilling guests with a hauntingly immersive experience from the get-go.
Follow the trail of bloody handprints as you make your way up the dimly lit stairs, where props are placed on every level to enhance the spooky ambience. Upon arriving on the second floor, you will be greeted by a row of authentic Chinese medicine cabinets. The Deceased used to be a Chinese medical hall in the 1950s.
Here’s a tip: It’s advisable to make a reservation in advance so you can obtain a passcode to access the blue door (located beside Mingle Cafe with an amulet stuck on it) without fuss.
“For example, ‘Pontianak” floral ingredients signify the demon’s fragrance during her presence and is served with a woman vampire mask”. – The Deceased
The Asian-inspired cocktail menu consists of both oriental and locally-sourced ingredients; from the likes of Chinese rose liqueur to vodka infused with red dates, Sarawak Tuak (rice wine) to oolong tea and spices such as star anise. Drinks are served in your not-so-typical liquor vessels which have been specially handpicked to highlight the taboo and superstitious practices of the undead culture.

Petty Person Beating (RM 35)
Tea of Oblivion (RM35) – a teapot blend of gin-infused Oolong Tea, passion fruit, fresh lemon juice, and soda water is one of the highly recommended drinks. The Petty Person Beating (RM38) is equally impressive. Using the same gin-infusion combined with Sarawak Tuak, Asam Boi, kumquat and tonic water, it is one of the most creative drinks on the menu.
Crispy Grilled Chicken
Besides drinks, The Deceased serves grub* that mimics the essence of hell. An example would be the Hungry Ghost Pasta, a seafood-based pasta tossed in tangy squid ink sauce, making it charcoal black to resemble the soot of flaming coal in the Hungry Ghost Legend. Standard bar bites and pizzas are available as well.
We believe that The Deceased deserves to be on the top bar list when you visit the capital of Malaysia. Its ever-changing menu is reasonably priced; cocktail prices range from RM35 to RM55 and dishes are priced between RM15 to RM36.
In the unlikely event where nothing on the menu seems to catch your fancy… Simply ask the mixologist behind the counter to concoct something special based on your taste preferences.
