Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak: Supper Gem in the West Opens till 3.30AM

Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak is a massively popular supper spot tucked away in the West of Singapore. We heard it has long satisfied the cravings of nocturnal creatures and decided to find out if it’s true.

When it comes to a delicious nasi lemak, you need a fragrant coconut-infused rice, sweet, piquant sambal to bind it all together and the usual trimmings—chicken wings, fried egg, ikan bills and peanuts—for added bulk.

The cooks keep their nasi lemak as authentic as possible, meaning that more emphasis is placed on the fragrance of the coconut rice and you don’t have more than 50 ingredients on display to choose from.

Chicken Set A

If you’re lazy to pick and choose and would rather enjoy the best of everything, order the Chicken Set (S$4). A sizeable plate, the combo comes with a heaping mound of fragrant coconut rice, crispy fried chicken wing, peanuts, ikan bilis, a fried egg and sambal.

The rice was fragrant with a rich, robust aroma of coconut—contrary to what many reviews say about it—and paired exceptionally well with the sweet sambal.

Our only gripe was that it was a tad too moist and clumpy but mixed around with the sambal, we suppose it really doesn’t matter all that much.

The chicken wing was crispy and golden with a prominent aroma of ginger. Certainly one of the main highlights of our meal!

The skin was light and crispy and the meat within was succulent with a savoury meaty flavour. Our guess is that they add turmeric into the marinate seeing as to how yellowish the exterior of the chicken wing is.

Otah

We threw on an Otah (S$1.50) to supplement our meal. Although a little on the pricey side, we were rather impressed with how it tasted. It was spicy, fragrant and very ‘lemak’. The notes of coconut was apparent, making it very delicious.

Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak

Overall, the nasi lemak here was decent and surpassed our initial expectations. We can see why it’s a hit among the supper crowd. There were hits and misses for sure but as to whether it was ‘power’, that remains a topic of debate.
