If Thailand’s Songkran Festival and Brazil’s Rio Carnival had a lovechild, the Boryeong Mud Festival would be it. Happening in Boryeong, South Korea, this event, like most epic festivals, sees the culmination of people from all over the world, coming together to rock out to EDM tunes and Kpop performances—all whilst being soaked from head to toe in mud.
Over its 20-year history, Boryeong Mud Festival has grown from being a local fair to an internationally-renowned event, attracting millions from all over the world. Spread out over 10 days (19 to 28 July 2019), visitors can expect a wide repertoire of happenings from mud zones (to get nice and muddied up of course), stages featuring all sorts of music performances, food and beer tents, busking zones and so much more!

What Does Boryeong Mud Festival Celebrate?
Boryeong (otherwise known as Daecheon) is famous for its vast coastline that boasts more than a hundred kilometres of fine mineral-rich sand and mud, and it emits large amounts of far-infrared rays which are known for being beneficial for the skin.
The festival kicked off back in 1998 as nothing more than a mere fair to help spread awareness about the region’s mud-based cosmetic products as well as to drive tourism towards the small, sleepy town of Boryeong.
Now, 21 years on, the Boryeong Mud Festival is one of the largest global summer festivals in South Korea raking in millions of dollars annually every July.
Getting There
Located just about a 2-hour drive away from the nation’s capital of Seoul, Boryeong is accessible via train, bus or car.
By train – Yongsan Station (Seoul) to Daecheon Station: 2 hrs 40 mins
By intercity bus – Gangnam Central City (Seoul) to Boryeong: 2 to 3 hrs

Festival Highlights
Giant Mud Bath
Scattered all over the beach, you’ll find a variety of activities—some free and some requiring admission fees. The objective is to get seriously dirty, so think mud pits, mud fountains, mudslides and even a mud prison.
Majority of the mud areas require an admission fee of 10,000 Won (approx. S$12) for youth and 12,000 Won (approx. S$14) for adults.
