A bona fide beach bar situated along Sentosa island’s golden strip, Coastes is everything you could ever want in a weekend getaway. Stepping into this breezy beach bar, you’re immediately greeted with a sense of calm and ultra-chill vibes.
During the day, the beach bar provides a cosy ambience for folks to lounge about and to bond over tasty food and refreshing tropical tipples whereas, at night, it transforms into a more intimate setting perfect for dates.
The bar and kitchen at Coastes serve a fine selection of premium beers, wine, house pour spirits, cocktails and hearty nosh—think comfort food classics such as tacos, pasta, pizza and brunch dishes as well. Surrounded by sun, waves and sand, Coastes is a tropical paradise and a dining destination that promises nothing short of total bliss.
The ambience at Coastes
Coastes exudes a rustic charm that’s both casual yet relaxing. The indoor seating area is decked out in wooden furnishing, benches and adorned with nautical-style decor. The bar and kitchen area is modelled to look like a shanty wooden hut and further down at the beach area is where you’ll find sunbeds and deck chairs that lead all the way down to the water’s edge.
Pulled Pork Tacos
A primarily Mexican dish but with heavy accents from American-style barbecue, Coastes’ Pulled Pork Tacos (S$16++) sees a heaping mound of tender pulled pork neatly arranged in the centre of two toasted tortillas. The shredded pork, in all its sticky-sweet and saucy glory, comes topped with pickled slaw comprising shreds of cabbage and green apple.
One of the tacos comes topped with a sunny-side up egg, which lends creaminess and a heightened richness to the taco. Most people use a fork and knife for this, but we prefer eating it the way it was designed—with our bare hands.
The dish oozes with a sweet, savoury and smoky appeal and the pickled slaw does well to cut through the intense flavour of the pork. The tortilla could taste better if it developed a crispier edge and a more toasted flavour.
Big Bad Wolf Pizza
The Big Bad Wolf (S$25++) sees a lovely thin-crust pizza topped with generous amounts of streaky bacon, roast chicken, capsicum and mushrooms. It is one of Coastes’ best-selling dishes.
An all-in-one affair, this pizza boasted a medley of flavours and textures. The smokiness and fattiness from bacon, sweetness and crunch from capsicum, bulk from chicken and umami from the mushrooms.
It took us a while to draw the link between its name and the pizza itself. But seeing how generous they were with the slivers of bacon, we suppose it’s safe to assume that few piggies were spared in the formulation of this meaty pizza.
Spaghetti Prawn Aglio Olio
Coastes’ Spaghetti Prawn Aglio Olio (S$28++) comprises spaghetti cooked al dente, six plump and succulent prawns and cherry tomatoes. It’s one of the better aglio e olio renditions we’ve tried.
The garlic and olive oil combination was spot on, giving the pasta a savoury flavour and a nice sheen. The prawns were fresh and sweet and the cherry tomatoes were nicely blistered, unlocking a sweeter and more intensified profile.
Among Coastes’ wide repertoire of cocktails, their best-sellers include the classic Singapore Sling (S$17++), Piña Colada (S$17++) and Mojito (S$17++). These classic cocktails are all fruity in nature and refreshing—just the things you’d want to combat Singapore’s sunny weather.
Singapore Sling
Their rendition of the Singapore Sling is considerably fruitier, boasting a syrupy sweetness that makes it easy to drink. The main flavour profiles in this cocktail include pineapple, cherry and citrus with an undertone of gin and bitter herb.
Piña Colada
A firm favourite of the tropics, the Piña Colada is a classic rum-based cocktail. It’s refreshing and thick, like a smoothie except ten times better. If you’re up for it, the bartenders at Coastes whip up a pretty mean version of it. Comprising pineapple juice, coconut cream and dark rum, their version is creamy, sweet, fruity and very delicious.
Mojito
A Cuban classic, the mojito is a popular summer drink that is sweet, citrusy and minty. A cocktail of simple make-up, this tropical cooler might seem like an easy drink to make but the art lies in being able to judge and measure out the ingredients properly so that you end up with a well-balanced drink as opposed to something that’s too alcoholic, too sour or too sweet.
Their rendition impressed in more ways than one. It was punchy, the way any good rum-based cocktail should be, but it was also refreshing without being overly sweet. Fair warning though, their mojito packs some serious kick.
