Curacao Penang: You Will Love This Epic Bar That Glows In The Dark

Curacao Penang – One of Georgetown’s best-kept secrets

Curacao is certainly one of Penang’s most underrated nightlife destinations. Dubbed as Malaysia’s only glow-in-the-dark bar, we were surprised by how the empty the venue was on a Saturday night. Where have all the people gone to?!

Curacao PenangFor selfish reasons, we were secretly thrilled that we had almost the entire venue to ourselves! However, Curacao surely deserves more patrons for its brilliant psychedelic concept.

Trippy lasers, neon murals and thumping music – the alternative bar is a paradise for hippies.

True to its name, Curacao liqueur is the inspiration behind this bar-slash-restaurant. Pronounced as ku-ra-sau, the unassuming bar is located inside a shophouse along Campbell Street in Georgetown. One of the things we love about Penang is that all nightlife establishments have no airs. We rocked up in shorts and sneakers, yet were still warmly welcomed by Curacao’s friendly staff.

Note: Curacao is currently only open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Remember to double-check their official Facebook page’s opening hours before heading down.

Upon being seated, you will notice that neon markers are readily available on each table. Patrons are encouraged to doodle on the blank coasters – and selected masterpieces will be displayed on the walls.

For that eye-catching Instagram shot, order Curacao’s G&T (RM 18 / USD 4.35 each). These gin and tonic cocktails illuminate in the dark – and we seriously could not take our eyes off them. Order a jug of The Panty Dropper (RM 18 / USD 14.50) if you can’t wait to get buzzed. The potent tequila-based cocktail is served in a pitcher with either ginger ale or red bull. Both The Panty Dropper and G&T will make a dramatic entrance with its accompanying dry ice smoke!

Curacao Penang MalaysiaCuracao doesn’t just sell glowing and smoking cocktails. The neon-themed bar also serves an affordable selection of food such as Spaghetti Bolognese (RM 15 / USD 3.65), Grilled Chicken Parmesan (RM 30 / USD 7.25) and Boring Ol Fries (RM 10 / USD 2.40). We meant to grab supper here, but the chef was unfortunately unavailable at that point in time.

Curacao Penang GeorgetownWish to take your party to a whole new level? Consider renting the entire Curacao for a whole night at only RM 1099 / USD 265. This package (capped at 30 guests) includes 10 jugs of beer, eight jugs of The Panty Dropper, 24 shots of tequila and a one-litre bottle of Absolut Vodka, Bombay Sapphire or Jameson Irish Whiskey. Totally worth it!
