Fuji Rock Festival—one of Japan’s most renowned summer music festivals—is back again and will take place at a popular ski resort, Naeba City Resort in the Niigata Prefecture.
More than your average rock festival, this year’s lineup reinforces Fuji Rock Festival’s commitment to musical diversity, presenting a lineup that spans a full spectrum of familiar and experimental genres.
For just one weekend (26 to 28 July 2019), Fuji Rock will play host to over a hundred artistes from around the world and Japan with headlining acts including big names such as SIA, The Chemical Brothers, Martin Garrix, Jason Mraz, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Cure and Death Cab For Cutie.
Set amidst lush greenery, this festival in the forest is the epitome of chill. Don’t be shy, spread out a mat and have yourself a picnic. Take in the sounds, the sights and the calm serenity the surrounding nature has to offer.
If not, squeeze your way to the front and rock out to your favourite acts—that works too.
This year’s lineup highlights Fuji Rock Festival’s commitment to diversity and experimental freedom with a myriad of acts spanning some of the world’s greatest rock bands—think Red Hot Chili Peppers and The Cure—to familiar favourites, Jason Mraz and the likes.
Japanese artists will make up a significant number of the festival’s acts. Among the slew of performers, one notable name to pay attention to is hip hop wonder kid, KOHH, who, for those who don’t know, actually worked with Frank Ocean on the single “Nikes” from Ocean’s 2016 album entitled, ‘Blonde’.
Ellegarden—one of Japan’s most influential punk rock bands will also be making an appearance on the first day.
Getting There
Shuttle Bus – Multiple shuttles run between Echigo Yuzawa Station in the Niigata Prefecture, parking facilities and the festival. Those staying in the Tashiro, Mitsumata areas can also use the shuttle buses. Bus fares are ¥500 per passenger. The return trip is free of charge.
Shinkansen Train – Take a train from Tokyo main station and disembark at “Echigo-Yuzawa Station” via the JR East line. Over there, there will be shuttle buses to ferry you to and fro the festival venue at Naeba Ski Resort.
Getting Tickets to Fuji Rock Festival
General tickets begin at 20,000 Yen (approx. S$252) for a 1-day pass, 36,000 Yen (approx. S$453) for 2-day passes and 45,000 Yen (approx. S$567) for 3-day passes.
Tickets are by no means cheap, but considering the number of star-studded names cramped into this 3-day event, we’d say it’s worth the splurge—you can regret it later.
