Oblong in Serangoon Opens Till 2am* & Serves Durian Waffles

Located in the heart of Serangoon Gardens—a renowned supper spot in Singapore—Oblong serves delectable sweet treats. Opened till 2:00 AM on Fridays and Saturdays, your midnight ice cream and waffle cravings can now be satisfied!

Famous for their Red Velvet Waffles, this quaint little shop has been producing delicious loaded waffles since 2012. Oblong boasts an amazing choice of flavours and stands out in its food presentation.

The ordering steps are pretty straightforward. But if you feel lost, do not hesitate to ask the smiley staff for assistance and recommendations. Spoilt for choice? Simply ask for a sampling spoon to taste the flavours before purchase!

We ordered the Durian Waffle Happy Combo* (S$13), where we were able to enjoy two scoops of ice cream instead of one. You will have to top up an additional cost of S$0.60 for premium flavours and S$1.20 for supreme flavours. We also got a Flat White (+S$1 for premium beverage) to go with our combo.

*Happy Hour runs from 2:00 PM – 6:00 PM every Monday, Tuesday and Friday.

We watched in awe as the friendly crew prepared our buttermilk waffle. As the timer beeped, she gently extracted the crispy golden brown dough from the waffle maker and placed it onto the cooling rack. She then proceeded to spread a generous portion of durian pengat on the waffle.

You can choose from seven different types of syrup – Chocolate, Strawberry, Caramel, Butterscotch, Maple, Condensed Milk and Gula Melaka. After sprinkling some icing sugar on the waffle stack, our ice cream scoops were then assembled one on top of the other. We chose an unlikely combination of Mao Shan Wang and Honeycomb – which surprisingly complemented each other.

The buttermilk waffle at Oblong was crisp on the outside and pillowy on the inside. Rich and creamy durian pengat filling was stuffed between the square-shaped waffles. If you are a fan of the king of fruits like us, go for a durian-on-durian waffle creation. However, this combination of durian waffle and durian ice cream might be too overbearing for some.

To offset the durian’s overwhelming pungency, order a scoop of Honeycomb or Earl Grey ice cream. The Honeycomb was the perfect palate cleanser, it was not too sweet and helped in cutting through the richness of the durian. The Butterscotch syrup was a harmonious add-on – who knew buttery saltiness would be such a great addition to durian and honeycomb?! Now, we are on the fence whether this medley of flavours is sweet or savoury.

We weren’t expecting much from a specialty waffle shop, but the Flat White we ordered was seriously as good as what you get in third-wave coffee shops!
