Restoran Ah Piaw JB (Johor Bahrum): 24-Hour Wanton Mee Eatery

Ranked as one of JB’s best wanton mee spots, Restoran Ah Piaw is an institution on its own. The best part? They open 24 hours daily! Many drop by just for its signature Wanton Mee, but locals will advise you to order their Abalone Kway Teow too.

Springy egg noodles, thinly cut shards of barbecue pork, a generous serving of homemade wontons and a lip-smacking, sweetish black sauce to tie it all together… If you aren’t already salivating, carry on reading and you just might.

If you’re a fan of spice, definitely opt for their chilli version which is tangier and spicier. We got the Dry Signature Black Sauce Wanton Mee (RM7.50) which sees a crazy-generous portion of springy egg noodles tossed in a sweet black sauce along with pork lard and sesame oil. The char siew slices are thin and a little dry compared to Cantonese style ones, but the charred flavour and spice rub still comes through.

The soup that accompanies the humble plate of noodles sees a total of seven mini dumplings. Despite being small in size, they pack major porky flavour. The dish is solid on its own but we enjoyed ours with a touch of tang in the form of pickled green chilis.

Another of Ah Piaw’s bestsellers is their Abalone Kway Teow. If you’re running short of tummy space, they also serve a variation without the kway teow. Despite being one of the more pricier items on the menu—it cost us RM19—, it’s well worth it. For what you pay for, you get a massive bowl of soup filled with scallops, prawns, fish balls, lean pork, wontons, fish maw and strips of mock abalone.

Albeit being clear, the flavour of the soup boasts an insane amount of body. The pork-based broth is enhanced with fried garlic and crispy pork lard to give it a more savoury taste. Having it piping-hot on a cold rainy day is the epitome of perfection. Period.
