Rochor Beancurd House: Tau Huey & Local Desserts Available till 3 am

Home to a slew of trendy cafes, artisanal ice cream parlours and eateries that open until late, Upper Thomson is basically supper Mecca for night owls like ourselves. Sandwiched between a clinic and pet shop is Rochor Beancurd House.

They’ve come a long way since they first opened, expanding their menu over the years, introducing items such as their tofu fries, fried chicken cutlet and an assortment of funky beancurd desserts. The best part? They open until 3 am on most days, making them a great option for night owls craving a relatively lighter late-night snack.

A nod to another one of Singapore’s beloved desserts, Ah Balling, Rochor Beancurd features on their menu, an option that allows customers to add glutinous rice balls into their beancurd dessert for just S$3.10.

The sesame and peanut-filled glutinous rice balls were firm yet chewy, providing an additional layer of sweetness (and bulk) to the otherwise ordinary beancurd pudding.

Elevated with the bittersweet flavour of matcha, the Japanese Green Tea Beancurd Pudding (S$2) is an interesting option to consider. Albeit tasting artificial, the notes of green tea were prominent and including pearls in ours—at an additional cost of S$0.60—made a world of a difference.

In between mouthfuls, you get bits of chewy pearl accented with a sweet-sticky caramel flavour. Matcha and caramel—who would’ve thought the combination could work so well.

The Dough Fritter (S$1.20) we got—commonly referred to as you tiao in the local tongue—were fragrant upon initial whiff, but when bitten into, was revealed to be oily, limp and a tad bit stale.

We were unfortunate in that we were given one from an older batch. Perhaps having one fresh out the fryer would have tasted better.

Best enjoyed warm, their Portuguese Egg Tart (S$1.70 for one) lived up to the hype surrounding it.

Flaky and buttery around the edges and sweet, custardy and molten in the middle, every bite was a slap back to our childhood days when indulging in egg tarts was a rare treat.
