Geylang Supper Singapore

Geylang Supper Guide: There’s more to Singapore’s infamous red-light district than its sleazy reputation and should you bother to venture into the ever-bustling depths of Geylang’s many alleys—otherwise referred to as ‘lorong’—you’ll come to discover that the precinct is packed with amazing food.

From comforting claypot bak kut teh, dim sum eateries that offer more than a hundred dishes to choose from to soul-comforting frog porridge, here is a list of 13 supper spots in Geylang. Our personal favourites include #4, #7 and #13.

1. 126 Dim Sum Wen Dao Shi (揾到食)

126-Dimsum-Geylang

126 Dim Sum is an iconic supper spot in Singapore among locals. Admittedly, it is somehow overshadowed by the likes of Swee Choon Tim Sum Restaurant, but it still stands out for the fact that they’re always operating—24/7 round the clock.

Albeit expensive, the restaurant boasts an array of a hundred (if not more) varieties of dim sum with signatures such as the humble fried carrot cake, har gao and sweet and savoury bao, to other contemporary delights such as Crispy Cheese ‘Tarik’, Scallop Siew Mai and Deep-Fried Frog.

2. Bali Nasi Lemak

Bali-Nasi-Lemak

Bali Nasi Lemak in Geylang serves a non-traditional, Chinese variant to the classic Malay dish. One that sees a massive spread of ingredients to choose from from the humble chicken wing, fried fish and otah to other, less traditional dishes such as the house-signature kicap manis fried chicken to golden crispy fried chicken, sambal petai and curry chicken.

The secret to their overwhelming popularity is their commitment to nailing the basics down perfectly—that is, their fragrant rice and piquant sambal.

The popular frog dishes to get include the one cooked with dried chilli and a sweet vinegar sauce (kung pao), if not the mainstream, ginger and spring onion variant. A testament to their quality, these folks even managed to bag the Michelin Bib Gourmand for 2 years running in 2018 and 2019.

What makes these folks special is that unlike many others which focus on the clear peppery variant, they adopt the Malaysian ‘Klang’ style, a Hokkien-inspired version that features the same components but in a rich, herbal broth.

Their bak kut teh is served in claypots which help to retain heat for longer periods of time. Besides the herbal pork broth, other dishes worth mentioning include their stewed pig trotters, pig intestines and beancurd skin—salted vegetables is a must as well but you probably already knew that.
